The walls of the headquarters of the National House of Chiefs (NHC), which is part of the newly-renovated facility at Manhyia in Kumasi, has been marred with posters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The development is raising questions about how such a sensitive organization, which the constitution debars from participating in politics, could have political posters on their facility.
Investigation conducted by The Chronicle has established that over fifty posters of the NDC have been pasted on the walls, attempting to woo voters from the traditional leaders and passers-by, ahead of the December 7 polls.
Indiscriminate pasting of posters in Kumasi, ahead of the election, has been phenomenal but the political posters of the NDC on the walls of the NHC are exceptional.
This paper noticed this development about two weeks ago, hoping that it would be corrected by the NHC and the NDC as soon as practicable, but the situation appears to have been brushed aside.
In a recent visit to the NHC, this paper observed that the front elevation wall of the traditional edifice has been marred with posters of the NDC, with the flag bearer and his running mate, John Dramani Mahama and Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, embossed on them.
Indeed, each pillar of the newly painted wall which is interlaced with metallic adinkra symbols had a poster of the umbrella movement pasted against it.
Any attempt to remove these posters on the less than one-year renovated facility will see these newly constructed walls repainted, since the primer would be peeled off.
Whilst about 65% of these posters have been removed at the frontage of the wall of the NHC, the same cannot be said about posters on the other sides of the wall.
Indeed, the entrance of the car park of the NHC was decorated with these political posters.
When The Chronicle called the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NHC, Mr. Stephen Owusu, he admitted that indeed their walls have been defaced with colours of the NDC, a development he claimed they have directed to be taken off.
According to him, the posters were pasted on their facility at night and they have instructed their cleaners to remove them, adding that the institution is prohibited by the constitution of Ghana from taking part in party politics, so they had to take the NDC posters from their facility.
“We are supposed not to do partisan politics, therefore, why must politicians paste their posters on our walls,” he bemoaned.
Asked if the NHC has officially informed the NDC about this constitutional breach, Stephen Owusu responded: “They did not inform us when pasting them, so we do not need to inform them.”
Reached on phone, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC, Mr. Kwame Zu, told The Chronicle that he is not aware of this development and he cannot pass any further comment until he goes to the NHC to see the posters.
