The Atwima-Kwanwoma District Directorate of the National Commission For Civic Education (NCCE) recently inaugurated the constituency Inter Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) to provide a common and effective platform for the key stakeholders to engage with the political parties towards achieving free, fair and peaceful 2020 elections.
The IPDC is expected to work closely with the Regional Peace Council and other key players in the peace building process to promote unity and social cohesion before, during, and after the December 2020 General Elections.
Rev. (Dr.) Michael Ampong, District Director of the NCCE, who addressed members of the committee at Twedie, explained that the district IPDC was to help monitor and report cases of violations of rules and regulations concerning the conduct of the elections and maintaining public order.
He mentioned the distribution of money and other goodies, declaration of election results by the political parties, defacing opponents’ posters, campaign violence, the use of provocative and abusive language, and the use of political party supporters to commit electoral offences as some of the violations to be monitored by the committee.
Rev. Ampong said the purpose of the IPDC was to focus on mediation and resolution of party conflicts and issues that trigger conflict, by using dialogue to mitigate same among the political parties.
The committee, as a way of deepening collaboration, is comprised of representatives from the political parties, NCCE, Electoral Commission (EC), youth groups, security agencies, the district assembly, traditional authorities, civil society groups, and community leaders.
Nana Okyere Tawiah-Antwi, District Chief Executive for Atwima-Kwanwoma, in a speech read on his behalf by Ms. Lois Ohene-Ayisi, reiterated that the price for peace cannot be quantifiable, and admonished the members of the committee to consider themselves as the cementing factor of society.
A Kumasi-based businessman and Managing Director of Donkor and Daniel Timbers (DDT), Nana Kwaku Owusu-Ansah, who is the Chairman of the committee, appealed to the members to cooperate and work hard towards achieving their set goals.
