A 45-year-old steel bender working on top of a two-storey building at Community 7, Tema, was electrocuted in the early hours of Friday, January 15, 2021.
The deceased, whose name was given as Efo Newton, according to a co-worker, Maxwell Koomson, they had been working on the building for days and so that fateful day they went to the site to continue work.
He said they got to the site very early, and there, Newton climbed the building to bend steel rods.
A few minutes later, Mr Koomson said they felt an electric shock on the building.
“Immediately, some of us raced upstairs where Newton was working, and to our shock, he had died with his arms folded on top of some bent steel rods.
“Personnel from the Tema Electricity Company of Ghana and the Community 8 Ghana Police Service were called to the scene, where the personnel of the ECG, after disconnecting power in the area, conveyed the lifeless body downstairs with the help of the police,” the co-worker narrated.
The Assembly Member for the area, Kwesi Assumaning, told news personnel that he heard the news at about 7am Friday, and when he got to the scene, he said: “I saw the lifeless body of the steel bender. I quickly called the police and ECG personnel who arrived at the scene to cut power supply in the area to enable access to the body.”
The body of the deceased had since been deposited at the Tema General Hospital morgue pending autopsy.
