The Rebecca Foundation, headed by the First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has built and commissioned a $60,000 Community Library for Kumawu in the Sekyere Kumawu District in the Ashanti Region.
The Kumawu Library, which comes under the Foundation’s “Learning to read, Reading to learn” initiative, is the sixth to be commissioned by the Foundation and the ninth under the management of the Ghana Library Authority in the Ashanti Region.
The Rebecca Foundation was established in January 2017 to impact positively on Ghanaians through various initiatives that support government efforts to improve the lives of Ghanaians, especially women and children.
With the provision of books, including fiction and nonfiction, as well as adult and children’s books and four computers, the facility at Kumawu seeks to provide a functional library to meet learning needs of the community and thus improve child literacy in the district.
The construction of the library is in response to a request by the Member of Parliament for Kumawu, Philip Atta Basoah, following a petition by the Headteacher of the local Anglican JHS.
Mr. Philip Atta Basoah commissioning the library on behalf of the First Lady, noted that learning is a weapon for development hence the library to provide the needed opportunity for children to make the most of their time.
He said the library should spur the pupils to learn hard and guide them to secure a better future.
Mr. Richard Darko from the Office of the First Lady mentioned that the Rebecca Foundation had commissioned community six libraries at Sefwi Debiso, Moree, Wenchi and Amasaman with two more yet to be commissioned and urged teachers to encourage children to read.
He said the Foundation had introduced various initiatives to improve on the lives of the girl child and women and mentioned these initiatives as “Because I want to be” to inspire girls; “Getting girls back to school” to resettle female school dropouts; “Letting those in school stay in school” and “Health outreach” as well Reading programmes.
The Regional Director of the Ghana Library Authority, Mr. Samuel Ofosu Frimpong, on behalf of the Executive Director noted that a library is an important resource for learning and therefore an indispensable tool for children’s continuous learning process.
He appealed for support in the provision of books and computers to keep children off the streets.
Madam Mavis Osei, an assistant director of the Sekyere Kumawu District assembly who represented the District Chief Executive, said it was an honour for the Foundation to have established its only community in the Ashanti region at Kumawu and encouraged the children to take advantage of the library facility and learn hard.
Mr. David Asokwa, the Regional Manager of the Anglican Education Unit, commended the Foundation for the foresight in providing the library and commended the MP, the district Assembly for ensuring the early completion of the project.
The head teacher, Isaac Kwasi Appiah assured that the facility would be well maintained and appealed to the District Assembly and the MP to consider rehabilitation and reconstruction of the old school block which passes as a death trap currently.
Meanwhile, Miss Mary Brayie, the Librarian appointed to man the Kumawu library has recommended that a Mobile Library Van is provided to extend library services and learning to other parts of the district to promote education.
