Yussif Sabo, the chief for the Muslim Council in the Tema Traditional Area is urging the government to be strict on anybody who disregards the Covid-19 health protocols.
He said the government needs to punish such undisciplined citizens to slow the rate at which the pandemic is killing Ghanaians.
“It is only by enforcing the law on the compulsory wearing of nose masks in public and ensuring that the restrictions on mass gathering are adhered to that Ghana can win the war against the global pandemic,” the septuagenarian chief told a section of the media at his residence, Ashaiman, where he dispatched some members of the Muslim Council to distribute some toiletries, hand sanitisers and face masks to four Arabic/English schools in Ashaiman and Tema.
Chief Sabo expressed surprise at the irresponsible attitude of some Ghanaians who, instead of putting on their nose masks, put the material in their pocket.
“When I hear news of such irresponsible attitudes of offenders, I shake my head and ask myself if only they knew how deadly the Covid-19 is, they would not gamble with their lives. If Ghanaians don’t believe that the virus is real, they should listen to radio and watch television to be informed of how people are dying of Covid-19 in other countries,” Chief Sabo said in Twi.
In order to make the wearing of nose masks and adhering to the health protocols, as announced by President Akufo-Addo a culture, Chief Sabo urged the intensification of public education “so that nobody will have any reason to complain when they are grabbed and punished for flouting the order as long as the virus lingers on.”
He charged all religious bodies and traditional rulers to help the government fight the pandemic which has claimed over 500 lives.
“This is a national fight and all of us need to put our hands on deck to slow the pandemic. The government needs our collective efforts in this mission,” he concluded.
The beneficiary schools were; Nurumustafia Islamic School, Rhamaniyya Basic School, Imam Mahdi Educational Complex and Chief Bello Islamic School.
Mohammed Abubakr, the Council’s Youth Chief, led the team to do the presentations on behalf of Chief Yussif Sabo.
Mohammed Abubakr advised pupils and students to, at all times, ensure that they adhere to the health protocols and be ambassadors in their communities.
“The government needs you (pupils and students) to also educate your parents and family and friends on the need to put on nose masks once they are outside their homes, wash their hands thoroughly with soap under running water, use the hand sanitiSer frequently and observe social distancing wherever they find themselves. That way, Ghana is assured of winning the war against Covid-19,” he explained.
He said the Muslim Council lookS forward to extending a similar gesture to Christian schools in the area.
“In view of this, we would gladly welcome donations from philanthropists and all well-meaning Ghanaians,” he concluded.
