The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tarkwa Nsuaem constituency in the Western Region, George Mireku Duker, has accused the Tarkwa Dompim Divisional Police command for breaking into his home last Thursday without any search warrant.
According to the MP, the Police forcibly broke into his home and ransacked his living room in search of a suspect the Police believed was hiding there, and in the process GHC4,000 got missing. That apart, his 90 year old grandfather was also manhandled by the Police.
The MP, who expressed grave concern about the development, said he least expected the Police to do this and that they could have used a better approach in search of the said suspect.
But the Police Regional Command has denied breaking into the MP’s home. According to them, a complainant made a case of assault against a suspect and the former led the police to a place he claimed the suspect was hiding.
The Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Olivia Adiku, who spoke to The Chronicle, said the complainant led them to a house, which they later discovered that it belonged to the Legislator.
The police, according to the PRO, knocked on the door till the suspect who she named as Dennis, came out and was arrested.
The Police PRO added that on their way back to the station, the Police team, which was led by the Divisional Commander himself, also arrested another suspect, Kingsley Cobbinah.
She said a search conducted on suspect Kingsley Cobbinah revealed live cartridges in his pocket.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who is also the Security Head of the Municipality, Benjamin Kesse, confirmed the story in a telephone interview that the Police indeed broke into the MP’s home.
MCE Kesse, who expressed surprise at the behavior and conduct of the police, told this Reporter he could not understand why a Divisional Police Commander would lead an operation to arrest a suspect of an assault crime.
According to MCE Kesse, he called the Divisional Police Commander on phone to express regret over the conduct of the Police, but the Commander reportedly told him he did not regret the action.
This is because he (Commander) could even go to parliament and effect the arrest of the Legislator.
MCE Kesse said he was surprised the Police Commander could tell him that on the phone because under normal circumstance, the police personnel cannot force their way into the house of a private citizen, let alone a Legislator, when they did not have a court warrant to do so.
The said suspect is said to have beaten up one of the family members engaged in a chieftaincy brawl in the area.
Information available to this Reporter indicates that the said suspect, who the police suspected was hiding in the room, was indeed arrested in the MP’s house.
