The Spanish government has donated some fleets of vehicles to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and the police to augment their effort in dealing with irregular migration.
The gesture is also to strengthen effective patrolling of Ghana’s borders to ensure safety.
Receiving the items on behalf of the two security agencies, Mr Ambrose Dery, Minister-Designate forInterior indicated that Spain is the partner that the ministry needs to fulfill the President’s vision of making Ghana a safer place.
Recounting the numerous donations the Ministry has received from the Spanish government so far, Mr Dery said that Spain has been very supportive of the Ministry in fighting irregular migration and human trafficking.
He extended his appreciation to the Country Representative of Spain and said he looked forward to more of such gestures. Madam Cristina Gallach Figueras, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Iberoamerica and the Caribbean, indicated that Spain shares the vision of solvling irregular migration, hence the drive to support countries battling with irregular migration andto curb the menace.
She said irregular migrations borders on issues of human rights and economic freedom and Spain is a country that cares about people’s rights, hence the need to support countries faced with such issues.
She alsoindicated that one country’s problem should be of concern to the others, since insecurity in one could lead to migration and overpopulation in the other so the need to extend a helping hand.
“Mr Minister, when your country is safer, the region is also safer, then we will be safer in Europe as well. This is a joint challenge and security cannot be taking for granted. We will continue to be friends and support you.
“When we see the results and see how efficient the things are being used and its impact, it gives us confidence and trust and also encourages us to build deeper relationships”.
The Public Relations Officer of GIS, Mr Micheal Amoako-Atta also indicated that the continuous support is a testament of the good works that GIS has been doing over the years and called on his colleagues to do more.
Talking about challenges in manning the borders, the PRO indicated that irrespective of restrictions put in place by the government, people still attempt to enter the country through unapproved routes.
This has forced the service to beef up its presence at the borders, by deploying more men.
Aside this, we have also set up migration centers in some parts of the county to ensure that the public is sensitised against irregular migration and to teach them alternative livelihood options in the country, to make them stay in the country and work.
