The President will, on Tuesday March 9, deliver the State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament House.
This was contained in a welcome statement delivered by the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban S.K. Bagbin, when the House resumed sitting after a three-week suspension.
The House went a three-week break after some of its members and staff tested positive for the Coronavirus.
The Speaker suspended the House in order to prevent more members from contracting the disease, and allow those who have been infected to receive treatment.
Speaker Bagbin noted in his statement that the President’s appearance in the House on Tuesday 9 March, this year is in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution.
Article 67 states that “The President shall, at the beginning of each session of Parliament, and before a dissolution of Parliament, deliver to Parliament a message on the state of the nation.”
“The House will also be privilege to receive H.E President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who is obligated by article 67 of the constitution to deliver to parliament a message on the State of the Nation at the beginning of each session of parliament and before the dissolution of parliament.
“His Excellency has given an indication to me that he is ready to make the presentation on Tuesday 9th March 2021.”
Again, the Speaker indicated that the President will, in accordance with Article 179 of the Constitution, present the Budget for the 2021 Financial Year on Friday March 12 for consideration and approval.
The Speaker stated that the House has a lot to do before it goes on recedes on March 30, hence, the members should corporate with the leadership of the House to achieve their targets.
On Covid-19, the Speaker said Parliament will not just adhere to the protocols, but will also adopt proactive measures that will ensure the safety of the House.
He said the House will rollout plans on how the members will submit themselves to be vaccinated. He called on the members to throw their support behind its leadership to ensure the success of the vaccination.
Meanwhile, the House is expecting the presentation of the report of the Appointment Committee on the nominations of His Excellency the President for ministerial appointment.
The report was laid by the Chairman of the Committee, Joseph Osei-Owusu.
Speaker Bagbin, while reading his welcome address, said he believes the House will consider the report of the Appointment Committee within the next few weeks to facilitate government business.
