The Eastern Regional Minister-designate, Seth Acheampong has promised to ensure that policies of the Minerals Commission are enforced to promote community mining to enable artisanal small scale miners engage in responsible mining.
According to the Eastern Regional Minister-designate, responsible community mining would be a fertile ground towards creating more jobs and sustaining the livelihoods of communities where these important minerals are located.
According to Mr. Seth Acheampong, who was speaking at the Appointments Committee sitting in Accra, if the laws of the Commission are enforced and made easily accessible to the mining communities in the Region, it will enable the community miners to acquire their mining licenses and help reduce galamsey in the country.
He said this in response to a question posed by a Member of the Committee on what he would do differently to address the issue of galamsey in the region.
As part of the law enforcement, Mr. Seth Acheampong believes revamping community mining “will go a long way in dealing with the incidences of illegal small-scale mining.
The Community Mining Scheme was launched in June 2020, by the Akufo-Addo-led government to curb illegal small-scale mining in the country.
The purpose of the scheme is to stimulate wealth creation, promote community involvement and linkages with other sectors of the economy and is expected to create 16,000 direct jobs nationwide.
