The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2023 All African Games met President Akufo-Addo yesterday at Jubilee House to update him on the progress made so far, five months after their inauguration.
Led by its Chairman, Dr Ofosu Asare, the LOC took the President through their achievements since they were set up.
He told the President that they have started building Team Ghana and it will be completed this year.
According to the LOC, another milestone they have been able to achieve is about securing broadcasting rights, which the chairman said holds a lot of money.
He said the initial discussion came out with a percentage of 70-30, but they disagreed with AU and finally got 55-45 for AU and Ghana respectively.
With regards to sponsorship, they managed to split it with AU, meaning 50% for both AU and Ghana.
Meanwhile, they want the President to help to fast-track processes for the Attorney General to go through the protocol agreement when it is ready by next week, so they can sign it.
With regards to the protocol agreement, he said that the AU proposed to Ghana to pay $2.5million but bargained down to $1.8million.
President Akufo-Addo in his remarks said he was impressed with the energy of the LOC towards the project.
He was hoping that after the swearing in of the Minister of Sports, that will be his first major task, stressing that there are many objectives, but this has to be of priority.
President Akufo-Addo told the committee that if they had done some work about their budgeting, they should submit it for it to be factored in this year’s budget.
On the review on the protocol, the President assured that it could be done early enough, stating that it was something that should be on high notice.
This will be the first time Ghana will host the games in over five decades.
The mandate of the LOC is to host and organise the All African Games with 54 countries in 25 disciplines.
They are supposed to build a 50,000-capacity multi-purpose stadium at Borteyman to host the opening and closing games.
They are supposed to implement the protocol agreement, which is between the African Union, which owns the game and the Republic of Ghana.
They are to establish a University of Sports and Development, as a legacy of the President, which will be the first in West Africa and second in the whole Africa.
