The Ashanti Regional Police Highway Team has gunned down a suspected armed robber at Anwiankwanta on the Kumasi-Obuasi road. According to a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, ASP Godwin Ahianyo, the incident happened around 2:00am on Tuesday May 11, 2021.
He stated that the Jacobu Police patrol team which was on routine patrol duties on the Anwiankwanta-Obuasi Highway encountered four unmasked men who emerged from a nearby bush flashing their torch lights signaling on-coming vehicles to stop.
According to the police, one of the suspects was holding a shotgun, while the others wielded machetes at a section of the road, between Heman and Akokoaso, known to be a robbery-prone area.
The statement indicated that a suspect, who was wielding a pump action gun, on seeing the police vehicle immediately fired at it, and the police also returned fire, leading to his death.
According to the police, the other three suspects managed to escape through the bush.
However, the patrol team returned to its normal patrols while searching for the escapees, and at about 5.00am arrested them along the roadside.
The suspects gave their names as Umar Boobey, 59, Jibor Karim, 28, and Saadoh Ali, 23.
The police revealed that one locally manufactured gun, two live and two empty AAA cartridges, one short machete, two torch lights, four mobile phones, and assorted dresses were retrieved from the suspects, while the body of the deceased has been deposited at St Peter’s Catholic Hospital morgue awaiting identification and autopsy.
