The listing of structures and immovable properties for the 2021 population census has commenced. The first seven days of the field data collection is targeting listing of structures, assigning serial numbers to the structures and collation of some basic information on the structures and their occupants.
Each enumerator has been assigned a small geographical area to collect the data. When The Chronicle went round, it discovered that houses have been listed.
One of the Enumerators, who only identified himself as Jacob, was seen collecting data from a household. He demanded from each household the number of people living there and their sexes. This information, according to him, was the first basic stage of his work and he would return for the primary information.
The 2021 census appears to be different from the previous ones. This time round, the enumerators are leveraging technology to aid their work in obtaining accurate data. They are using specially made tablet for their work and that appears to make the 2021 census technology based, as compared to the previous ones where enumerators were manually collecting data.
The population and Housing census is done every ten years and the 2021 census would be the sixth after independence. The first five post-independent censuses were conducted in 1960, 1970, 1984, 2000 and 2010. However, before independence, there were six population censuses conducted in the then Gold Coast in 1891,1901,1911,1921, 1931 and 1948.
The population and housing census is meant to help government to make projections for the country particularly with respect to the population size, sex et al.
