Dave Agbenu, one of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) presidential candidates, has taken his regional campaign tour to the Tema Chapter, where he interacted with the members on his vision for practitioners.
He tied his vision on four thematic pillars namely; unionising practitioners, negotiating better remuneration for journalists, GJA becoming self-reliant and getting regular training, including academic courses for practitioners.
Mr Agbenu, Editor of News Times Corporation, explained that as a journalist, who understands the real challenging issues most journalists are struggling to surmount, would ensure that media practitioners do not continue to look sorry because of non-payment of salaries for their hard work or in some cases, paid a paltry stipend.
It is when journalists are paid better remunerations by their employers that there would be high demonstration of professionalism in their works, he noted.
“My administration is bent on taking up the poor working conditions of journalists if given the opportunity to become the next GJA President. Journalists must live well too,” Mr Agbenu campaigned.
On making the GJA financially independent, he said his administration would emulate other professional associations like Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) that has properties which generate income for the association.
“At all the regional chapters, we will have a GJA property to generate revenue to run the chapters and we will raise funding for these projects from corporate Ghana and government. The lobbying skills that enabled the GJA to put the Press Center are what my administration shall employ,” he explained.
The leader of the Tema Chapter of the GJA, Dominic Hlovor, thanked Dave Agbenu and his team for the campaign and lauded him for his workable vision for media practitioners in Ghana should he become the next GJA President. Mr Hlovor wished the aspirant well in the three-man contest which is yet to be slated.
