Just before the dust could settle on the James Town bullion van robbery, another bullion van has been attacked by armed robbers on the Accra-Cape Coast road in the Central region.
The van, with registration number GN 6956-17, was attacked yesterday at a small village called Gomoa Okyereko, on the Winneba-Accra stretch.
Unlike the James Town incident, where the police officer providing security for the van lost his life, while the driver sustained severe injuries, none of the occupants in the GN-6956-17 bullion van was injured.
It would be recalled that on June 14, 2021 a police officer, Emmanuel Osei and a hawker, Afua Badu, were attacked by a group of armed robbers at Adedenkpo, a suburb of Jamestown in Accra.
The robbers were said to have trailed a bullion van in a taxi and on a motorbike and upon arrival at a less crowded location, fired indiscriminately, killing them instantly.
According to an eyewitness, the police officer, Emmanuel Osei was providing security for the van while the young lady, Afua Badu, was a bystander who witnessed the incident. The driver of the van also sustained severe injuries and is currently responding to treatment at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
With yesterday’s incident, reports indicate that the suspected armed robbers, numbering about six, allegedly emerged from the bush and shot at the window of the passenger side of the vehicle, where the police security guard was sitting.
The armed men took to their heels after the failed attempt to decapitate the police officer and the driver of the van. The incident was reported to the Winneba police, even though it occurred at Gomoa Okyereko.
