The Member of Parliament for Assin Central and Chairman for the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has committed to the construction of a state-of-the-art Cardiothoracic Centre for the 37 Hospital.
To prove his words, Mr Agyapong, at a groundbreaking ceremony held at the hospital’s premises made part payment of GH¢1, 200,000.00 to the management of the health facility, although the total cost of the centre was not revealed.
Addressing the gathering at the ceremony, he said it has been his burning desire to do something very significant to strengthened the capacity of the hospital to deliver on its mandate, as the first point of call during disaster.
The MP was also encouraged to sponsor the construction of the ultramodern facility because only few countries in the West African sub-region can boast of a well resourced cardiothoracic centre to perform heart related procedures.
Meanwhile, he said cardio care requires sufficient diagnosis and techniques, infrastructure and medical team with advance training and expertise.He said the absence have contributed to high cost of treatment for patients with heart and respiratory diseases.
Mr Agyapong worriedly said since health experts are advising that very little can be done to reduce the incident of congenital heart diseases, yet a high number of persons will continue to require prompt and reliable surgical intervention.
“You will agree with me that we have to be prepared and concentrate our effort towards capacity in that aspect of health care,” he urged.
The Chairman for the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior further added that as the public a lot from the health facilities, it will be prudent that they receive all the support they needed to deliver.
He also urged the military to invest the funds on the project, as it was the only reason assigned to it.
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Vice Admiral Seth Amoama received the cheque for the construction and thanked the MP for the kind gesture.
He said the centre after its completion will be second to the National Cardiothoracic Centre and in terms of modern equipment, it will be number one.
The CDS said centre after completion will have specialist and diagnostic unit for people with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases as well as it will serves as a research and training point for medical personnel in Ghana and the subregion.
According to him, since the centre will be hosting modern equipment, the hospital management has begun talks with the sponsor for the training of special and technical staff to man the facility.
The CDS once again thanked the MP for the support and also used the occasion to call on the public to come on board to ensure successful completion of the centre, which stand to benefit the entire country.
