Twenty one persons lost their lives in separated gory road accidents in the Northern Region at the weekend.
Nineteen of them died while several others sustained various injuries when the vehicle on which they were travelling was involved in an accident on the Yapei-Yapala stretch of the Tamale-Kumasi road.
Two persons were also confirmed dead at Diare, near Savelugu on the Tamale-Walewale road, when a cargo vehicle loaded with woos collided with a tricycle.
The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Yussif Mohammed Tanko, confirmed the accidents in an interview with the Ghanaian Times.
Regarding the Yapei-Yapala accident, he said 16 people perished on the spot, while three others died later at the hospital.
ASP Tanko stated that a Neoplan bus with registration number GW 2659 T, which was moving from Nalerigu to Ejura, crashed with a bus with registration number GM 5383-12, which was moving from Kumasi to Tamale.
ASP Tanko explained that the Neoplan bus was trying to overtake a cargo truck and collided with the bus.
He said drivers of the two buses died on the spot and the police could not immediately establish the cause of the accident.
The Police PRO said all the bodies had been sent to the Tamale Teaching Hospital mortuary for autopsy, and those who received injuries were rushed to the same hospital.
Three months ago,a similar accident occurred on the same spot where 14 people died and several others sustained injuries.
A resident of the region, Sule Abukari, told the Ghanaian Times that the Tamale-Kumasi stretch of road was accident prone, indicating that accidents occurred in the area almost every two weeks.
