The Ghana Health Service has ordered investigations into circumstances leading to the death of a nine-week-old baby at the St. Gregory Hospital at Kasoa in the Central Region.
Hospital management could face sanctions if it is established that a doctor pulled the plug from an oxygen machine which resulted in the demise of the infant due to the parents' inability to afford the cost of keeping it on.
Little Prosper's parents tell Joy News a medical doctor on duty pulled the plug on the oxygen machine because they could not pay the GHS533 needed to keep their son alive.
Hospital authorities are tight-lipped on the issue but say they are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of the baby.

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Anthony Nsiah Asare says it would be wrong for a medical officer to remove oxygen mask from a patient if it is established the patient had a greater chance of survival.
“But if you believe that the person will survive and you take off the oxygen mask because the child’s father or mother could not afford to pay, then it is unacceptable”, the D-G said on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM, Wednesday.
“If oxygen is there and it’s taken off [if it is true] because the father or mother could not pay, then we have to look for what happened,” Dr. Nsiah Asare told Show host, Daniel Dadzie assuring that action will be taken against the facility “If it actually happened”.
