One person is reported dead during a a swoop in a town called Hain in Tumu of the Upper West region.
There is uneasy clam in the area following the death of Kanwei Hanidu, 21.
Several suspected criminals were arrested on Thursday, May 17, 2018 during the swoop which was conducted by a SWAT patrol team after spotting them smoking at the bank of a dam.
In an attempted to escape police arrest, Kanwei Hanidu drowned in the dam.
According to eyewitnesses, the angry townfolks rushed to the police station when they heard the death of Kanwei and pelted stones at the officers on duty, whiles the police returned with fire. They blamed the police of killing the deceased.
“In an attempt to escape arrest some of them dived into the dam and one got drown,” The regional commander DCOP Otchere Boapea explained.
According to him, his men managed to disperse the crowd at about 7pm on Thursday.
He said some properties belonging to the police were vandalised saying security has been beefed up in the area.
“We have managed to calm tempers and the situation is under control. We have beefed up security with more men being deployed at Gwollu and Tumu,” he said.
The injured persons were sent to the hospital for treatment.
