One of the destroyed buildings
A heavy rainstorm has caused significant destruction in parts of the Fodome Traditional Area in the Volta Region, leaving more than 50 houses damaged and several families displaced.
The storm, which struck the area with strong winds, ripped off roofing sheets and weakened the structural integrity of many buildings, with some walls partially collapsing. The incident has left residents counting their losses as they struggle to salvage what remains of their properties.
The Hohoe Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Raphael Kumagah, confirmed the incident and indicated that a team had been dispatched to assess the extent of the damage. He noted that although the destruction was widespread, no casualties were recorded.
According to him, the situation has been officially reported to the Municipal Chief Executive and the Member of Parliament for the area, with assurances that steps would be taken to support affected residents.
Residents say the rainstorm destroyed not only their homes but also valuable personal belongings and farm produce, worsening their already difficult living conditions.
One of the victims, Mr. Emmanuel Geli, said the disaster has rendered him homeless, forcing him to seek refuge with neighbours and other community members. He described the experience as distressing and called for urgent assistance.
Another resident, Madam Esther Asare, recounted how she had to quickly evacuate her home at about 3:00 p.m. when strong winds began ripping off the roofing sheets. She said although her household escaped unhurt, they have been left without shelter.
Affected residents are appealing to government agencies, non-governmental organisations and benevolent individuals to provide immediate relief, including roofing materials and other essential supplies, to help them rebuild their lives.
