Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has described 2025 as a "crazy year", reflecting with pride on a remarkable 12 months that ended with Ghana ranked as the third-best women’s team in Africa.
The Swedish coach, who took charge in January, said he was pleased with the progress made by the team in a short period, highlighted by a bronze medal finish at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and an encouraging end to the year against top-level opposition.
"Yeah, there have been a little bit of a crazy year, I will say, almost a year with the Black Queens," Bjorkegren said. "They have been amazing. Difficult sometimes, but overall it has been a great experience, and I’m so happy that I took the opportunity to be the head coach for the Black Queens."
Ghana claimed third place at WAFCON after narrowly missing out on the final, losing to hosts Morocco on penalties before defeating South Africa in the playoff. Bjorkegren described the tournament as a major step forward for the team.
"We grew a lot as a group. We worked hard, made sure we were tactically better and physically well prepared. Losing on penalties was tough, but winning the third place was special. It was an amazing summer with a great celebration in Ghana," he added.
The Black Queens later backed up that success by cruising past Egypt 7-0 on aggregate to qualify for the next WAFCON, further underlining their progress under the new coach.
