Asante Kotoko remain confident that Abdul Karim Zito’s resignation will not affect their preparations ahead of Sunday’s Ghana Premier League week 22 clash against rivals Hearts of Oak.
The Porcupine Warriors will host their archrivals at Baba Yara Stadium in a match crucial to regaining momentum in the league.
Zito stepped down as head coach following Kotoko’s Round of 16 MTN FA Cup exit to Aduana FC. The team has struggled recently, winning only once in their last five league matches and sitting fifth, eight points behind leaders Medeama SC.
Prince Owusu, Zito’s first assistant, has been appointed interim coach and will be supported by Mohammed Hamza Obeng, head coach of Kotoko’s junior side.
Communications director Sarfo Duku emphasized the smooth transition.
"Well, we know that football is a continuous process. He was not doing the work alone. He had his other technical staff with him. And so, once he was not there, we could count on the others to move the club forward," he said.
Duku added, "That's exactly what we have done - by putting in charge the first assistant coach, Prince Owusu, to be supported by Mohammed Hamza Obeng, who is the head coach of the junior team, and then the second assistant to coach Zito for the senior side."
Zito, who took charge in July last year, led Kotoko to MTN FA Cup glory in the 2024/25 season, leaving a legacy for the interim staff to build on.
