Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has acknowledged the mounting pressure from AFC Leopards as the Kenyan Premier League title race reaches a fever pitch.
Gor Mahia reinforced their supremacy at the top with a commanding 3-0 victory over KCB at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, reclaiming a six-point cushion after Leopards’ 2-1 win over Posta Rangers on Saturday.
Speaking after the win, the Ghanaian tactician highlighted the psychological edge that comes with competing under pressure.
“Of course, in football there is always pressure, and we like it, it is a healthy one,” Akonnor said.
“The team that will have the nerves to keep going is the team that will probably go far,” he noted.
Gor Mahia currently lead the FKF Premier League table with 46 points from 21 matches, while AFC Leopards, with a game in hand, trail on 40 points.
Akonnor exuded confidence in his squad’s composure, noting the team’s growth over recent months.
“If you look at it some four, five months ago, we would be a little bit worried but now, we are very confident of how the players possess things, and how they play,” he said.
Reflecting on the performance against KCB, Akonnor praised his players’ intensity and tactical discipline. “We were a little bit aggressive⦠we didn’t want to give them a chance, and we did it very well,” he said, highlighting the precise passing and wide-play that allowed Gor Mahia to dominate.
With five crucial fixtures ahead - including matches against Posta Rangers, Ulinzi Stars, Shabana, Tusker FC, and Kariobangi Sharks - the pressure will only intensify.
