Referees Manager of the Ghana Football Association, Alexander Kotey, has vowed to ensure the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system before the end of his tenure.
The introduction of VAR in football has received widespread acclaim globally, with many praising it as one of the most effective technology to improve officiating and reduce costly errors during matches.
Over the years, domestic competitions, including the Ghana Premier League and the Ghana Division One League have witnessed several controversial refereeing decisions. These incidents have often sparked public debate, with many football fans and stakeholders calling for the introduction of VAR to help curb poor officiating and enhance transparency in decision-making.
Recently, the president of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, also expressed dissatisfaction with the current level of officiating in domestic competitions while promising to take steps to raise standards.
Kotey, who assumed office as the FA’s Referees Manager five years ago, believes technology will play a crucial role in improving refereeing standards in the country and is determined to make VAR a reality in Ghanaian football before leaving office.
“Refereeing in modern football is heavily driven by technology. Over the next five years, I want to ensure the implementation of VAR in our game. It is one key thing on my heart,” Kotey told GFA media in an interview.
Beyond introducing technology into the local game, Kotey also harbours a bigger ambition of producing a Ghanaian referee capable of officiating the final of the FIFA World Cup, a feat that would mark a historic milestone for refereeing in the country.
