Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo is expected to make his Champions League debut on Wednesday night when Manchester City face Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
Semenyo joined City from Bournemouth during the January transfer window and has settled quickly into Pep Guardiola’s squad. The Ghana international has already scored seven goals in thirteen appearances, adding another attacking option to City’s forward line with his pace, strength and direct play.
Speaking ahead of the match, City manager Pep Guardiola said it is an important moment for Semenyo as he prepares to play in Europe’s top club competition for the first time.
Guardiola said gaining experience in matches of this level will help both the player and the team in the long term.
“As quick as they [Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi] start to live these kind of situations, the better it will be for the future of this club,” Guardiola said while discussing the opportunity for Semenyo to play in the Champions League.
Semenyo has built a strong reputation in the Premier League through his performances with Bournemouth, which earned him his move to Manchester City. Since arriving at the Etihad Stadium, he has adapted well to the demands of Guardiola’s system and has quickly become part of the team’s attacking setup.
