The Mmrewasan Clan of Akyem Asuom in the Eastern Region has firmly dismissed reports suggesting that Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III has been destooled as the Krontihene of Asuom.
According to the family and the people of Asuom, Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III remains the legitimate Krontihene, and the public has been urged to disregard any information to the contrary.
The traditional leader, known privately as KwasiRingold, was alleged to have been destooled by the Asuomhene, Osabarima Ofosuhene Apenteng II, following comments he made criticising the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo before and after the 2024 general elections.
Nana Obodade had openly condemned the former president’s leadership and expressed support for President John Dramani Mahama.
In December 2025, he was also reported to have criticized the New Patriotic Party’s presidential hopefuls, describing all five as “sankwas” (sub-standard and incompetent), and arguing that the party’s current leadership lacked the calibre of past figures such as Prof. Albert Adu Boahen, Victor Owusu and J. A. Kufuor.
However, Opanyin Kofi Agyabong, Dwantoahene of the Asuom Asona Mmrewasan family, has categorically denied any destoolment.
Speaking at a family meeting held at Asuom on Saturday, January 3, 2026, he challenged the authenticity of the alleged ritual said to have been performed to remove the Krontihene.
He explained that customary practice requires that a chief accused of wrongdoing must first be summoned, formally charged, and given a fair hearing before chiefs and elders.
“No chief can sit in his palace with bodyguards, slaughter a sheep, and claim to have destooled a Krontihene,” he stressed.
Opanyin Agyabong added that if there were grievances, the Asuomhene should have referred the matter to the Okyehene, who would then summon the Krontihene to respond, adding that, any action outside this process, is neither traditional nor customary.
He further emphasised that Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III, as Mmrewasanhene and a palanquin chief who occupies a black stool, can only be destooled by the Mmrewasan royal family.
“No one, not even the Chief of Asuom, has the authority to do that,” he said.
Supporting this position, Opanyin Kofi Amoako (Alhaji), head of the Asuom royal family that installs the Asuomhene, affirmed the family’s rejection of the alleged destoolment.
Meanwhile, the youth attributed the lack of development in the area to the long-standing chieftaincy disputes and appealed to the Okyehene, Osagyefo AmoatiaOforiPanin, Overlord of Akyem Abuakwa, to intervene to ensure lasting peace in Akyem Asuom.
