Four men suspected to have robbed some Chinese nationals of cash amounting to GH¢200,000 and other valuables have been arrested by the Western Central Regional Police, less than 24 hours after the incident.
The suspects, identified as Issaku Ibrahim, 42, Fatau Ali, 25, Yahaya Mumuni, 26, and Emmanuel Antwi, 22, were arrested following a robbery attack at Malta, a suburb of Asankrangwa in the Western Central Region.
According to police, the incident occurred on March 12, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m., when one Chen Zchao, a Chinese national, reported to the Asankrangwa District Police Command that he and his younger brother, Yao Chan, were attacked at their spare parts shop by six armed men.
The suspects, wielding two pump-action guns and cutlasses, allegedly robbed the victims of three mobile phones and cash amounting to GH¢200,000 before fleeing the scene in a black Toyota Voxy vehicle towards Sefwi Bekwai.
Police said the Asankrangwa Night Patrol Team, led by Inspector Stephen A. Bimpong, immediately responded to the complaint and pursued the suspects while information was relayed to the Sumpre Police checkpoint to assist in intercepting the vehicle.
At about 8:00 p.m. the same day, the suspect vehicle with registration number GS 756-25 approached the Sumpre Police barrier but the occupants reportedly attempted to escape upon seeing police officers on duty.
Personnel at the checkpoint, together with the patrol team, chased and arrested four of the suspects after a brief pursuit.
A search conducted in the vehicle led to the retrieval of cash amounting to GH¢198,200, three mobile phones, two pump-action guns, fourteen AA cartridges, a Bruni Mod 84 Cal. 9 PAK pistol loaded with eight rounds of ammunition, one machete, an amulet, and two CCTV decoders.
The exhibits have been secured at the Charge Office for evidential purposes.
Police said preliminary interrogation revealed that the suspects travelled from Obuasi to carry out the robbery.
The suspects are currently in police custody assisting investigations, while efforts are ongoing to arrest two other accomplices who initially escaped.
Meanwhile, police disclosed that one additional suspect has since been arrested by community members and handed over to the police to support ongoing investigations.
