The governing body announced on Monday the appointment of Tom Dielen, an experienced sport leader, to manage day-to-day operations and lead the organisation toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Dielen served as secretary general of World Archery for two decades, during which time he developed and implemented a strategic plan that transformed the international federation. This plan restored some of the sport’s influence within the Olympic programme during a challenging period. He competed in archery at a national level in his youth, including field and 3D.
The Belgian-Swiss national, has also held senior positions at the World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Shooting Sport Federation. He is also a member of various committees and boards within the Olympic Movement, including the Association of Summer International Olympic Federations, the International World Games Association and the Association of Paralympic Sport Organisations. Dielen holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science Engineering from the Catholic University of Leuven, where he also received a Sports Merit Award. He also holds a Sports Management degree from the Belgian Olympic Academy and is an honorary member of the Compagnie des Archers de Lausanne.
Recently taking up duties, he will work from World Boxing’s office in Lausanne and report to the Executive Board and World Boxing President Gennadiy Golovkin. Mr Golovkin said, “Dielen’s background in international sport aligns perfectly with the responsibilities and expectations of our organisation. I am confident that his experience will strengthen our work and support its future development.”
The appointment marks another step in World Boxing’s ongoing senior management restructuring, following the acclamation of Golovkin as president at the Congress held in Rome last November. Founded in April 2023, the organisation received provisional recognition from the International Olympic Committee on 25 February 2025 as the international federation responsible for governing boxing worldwide.
Dielen added, “I am truly excited to begin a new challenge within the Olympic Movement as secretary general of World Boxing. From my first contact with president Golovkin, we established an excellent rapport, and I thank him and the board for this opportunity.”
Upon taking up the role, the new secretary general expressed his desire to engage closely with the athletes in what he described as a “year full of exciting moments, with events for young athletes in Thailand and, of course, Senegal”. This will be followed by the World Boxing Cup series of events in Brazil, China and Uzbekistan, as athletes begin their journey towards LA28.”
He also announced that he will expand the team in the coming months “to ensure a bright Olympic future for the sport” during this crucial period, with pre-Olympic tournaments taking place over the next two years in preparation for LA28. This will be his first time overseeing a full Olympic cycle, given the recent creation of World Boxing, and he will be responsible for coordinating with national federations to meet qualification requirements and quotas.-insidethegames
