[Ghanaian Chronicle]My attention has been drawn to a statement from the end of Mr. Alfred Agbesi Woyome, the man being prosecuted by the Republic of Ghana for fraudulently procuring a "judgment debt payment". In the statement in question, it has been alleged that the Minority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, met Alfred Agbesi Woyome at Schipol Airport Amsterdam, and the former ran away from Mr. Woyome. This is a palpable untruth.

The President of the Central University College, Prof. Kwesi Yankah, has been appointed the new chairman of the Conference of Heads of Private Universities in Ghana (CHPUG). Prof Yankah succeeds Prof. James Hawkins Ephraim who is the Vice Chancellor for the Catholic University. Prof. Kwesi Yankah, who was inducted into office at a ceremony held in Accra recently, in his acceptance speech, expressed his gratitude to fellow Presidents for entrusting the organisation into his hands. He felt privileged to have been elected to the high office as the Chairman of CHPUG. Though he considered his election as a show of confidence, he also interpreted it as a promissory note that members of the organisation will fully cooperate to achieve set targets as he appealed to the membership of the organisation to lend him their fullest cooperation. For the new Chairman, his election comes at a time when private universities are striving for equality in educational service delivery and also access to state-owned facilities. The others include equality in the search for quality and standards in education, and access to employment opportunities for graduates. Prof. Yankah hopes that the search for these targets will be further enhanced during his period of tenure. Prof. Yankah highlighted acceptance of the concept of private-public partnership as indispensible in ensuring the maintenance of standards in education at all levels. He believes that together with the state-owned universities -- to which most private universities are affiliated, the best practices in the training of students to creatively respond to emerging local and global needs will be adopted. He sees the impression of private universities being sites for greed, exploitation, unaffordable fees and inferior education as unfortunate. He considers such perceptions as unfounded and uncritical, and enjoined all in a collective effort to reverse such a deficit. He further hopes that his three- (3) year tenure will see heightened collaboration between private universities and their mentor-institutions. He also hopes to see a better collaboration between private universities and the regulatory bodies like the National Accreditation Board and the National Council on Tertiary Education. Prof. Yankah wishes to see these institutions as partners to private universities rather than adversaries who were constantly litigating in the public domain. The new chairman, Prof. Kwesi Yankah, thanked his predecessor Prof. Ephraim for his inspiring record of achievement in the past three years. Prof. Yankah believes this record will guide him in the process of orientation in his new position.

The 2013 edition of the Worldview Education Fair came off this weekend in Accra. Over 300 students from second- and tertiary cycle institutions participated in the fair, which aimed at introducing world-class universities from around the globe to Ghanaian students. Participating schools included the University of Limerick-Ireland; Columbia College, Canada; Manipal University, Dubai; ICN Business School, Germany and France; Wisconsin International University College, Ghana; Campus France, Ghana; and University of Sussex, United Kingdom. Folabi Obembe, Event Director of Worldview International Group, said the education fair serves to get virtually every child into school anywhere he/she wants, and also to introduce a host of institutions to Ghanaian students who might not be able to get admission into the institutes here. “We at Worldview take education very seriously because without it success is not assured, and so whatever we can do to get anyone into a reputable tertiary institute is our top priority. “We do these education fairs to enlighten Ghanaian students on the other opportunities that exist in other countries. We bring executives from these world-class institutions to interact with the students so they can have first-hand information on the courses and how they can benefit them. “Most of these institutions also have international programmes, thereby making it easy for students who cannot get admission into the likes of University of Ghana, Cape Coast University or the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology,†he said. Vaibhav Anand, Business Development Manager of the Manipal University from Dubai who was excited with the number of students present at the exhibition said he hopes to see some Ghanaian students come to Dubai to study in the near-future. “I am very happy to be in Ghana for the first time, and I am equally impressed with the attendance here. This goes to show that Ghanaians are very much interested not only in education outside the country, but learning about other cultures too. “I hope that we can have about 20 Ghanaian students at the Manipal University in about two or three years,†he added.
