FDB destroys unwholesome products in Wa
Wa, Nov. 12, GNA – The Upper West Regional office of the Food and Drugs Board (FDB) at the weekend destroyed unregistered and unwholesome products worth 20,660.00 Ghana Cedis at a landfill site in Wa.
The items, which were considered to be noxious and posed health risk to consumers, included 26 bags (50kg) of bread floor and assorted medicines, including herbal and aphrodisiac products
The products were confiscated from 342 retail shops by the FDB during routine inspection and post-market surveillance in the region to prevent customers from buying unregistered, unwholesome and expired products.
Briefing journalists before the exercise, Mr. Gordon Akrugu, Upper West Regional Manager of the Board, said the area had ceased to be a dumping ground for sub-standard products after the FDB opened an office in Wa in August last year.
He cautioned the public against purchasing unwholesome food and counterfeit and substandard products that appear appetizing but had traces of high level contamination because of the unhygienic environment under which vendors operated.
Mr. Akurugu pledged the Board’s commitment to ensuring safety and quality of food, drugs, cosmetics, household chemicals and medicines and medical devices.
He said, consequently, the FDB was strengthening its regulatory systems by supporting manufacturing Industries to adopt good management practices.
