Former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has applauded Antoine Semenyo's exceptional form at Manchester City while also challenging the forward to deliver the same level of performance for Ghana as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches.
In a clear acknowledgement of the striker's club success, Vanderpuye stated, "He's playing wonderfully well."
The comment refers to Semenyo's stellar season following his £65 million move from Bournemouth to Manchester City, where he has scored 12 Premier League goals and established himself as a key player for Pep Guardiola's side.
Despite this high praise, Vanderpuye stressed that the ultimate test for Semenyo lies in his contributions to the national team. The former minister expressed a hope shared by many Ghanaian fans, saying, "I would just pray that he's able to transfer whatever he's doing with Manchester City to the Black Stars."
He noted that, up to this point, Semenyo has not yet convinced the nation with his goal output for Ghana, having scored three times in 32 international appearances.
Vanderpuye also pointed to a unique source of motivation for the upcoming World Cup, highlighting Semenyo's personal connection to one of Ghana's group opponents. "You know he was born in England, and I think it is good⦠that is enough motivation for him to perform better when he plays the English," he said.
With the World Cup drawing closer and Ghana set to face England, Croatia, and Panama in Group L, the spotlight is firmly on Semenyo to transform his undeniable club brilliance into decisive performances for the Black Stars on football's biggest stage.
