Austria manager Ralf Rangnick has disclosed the reason for including injured duo Maxi Wober and David Alaba to his squad to face Ghana.
The former Manchester United interim coach named a 28-man squad for the international friendly against the Black Stars on Friday, March 27, 2028.
Notably inclusions to his team are Paul Wanner and Carney Chukwuemeka, who both switched nationalities recently to play for the Austrian senior team.
"We are delighted that they have chosen us. During the training course, they now have the opportunity to recommend themselves for the World Championships. Looking ahead to the next ten to twelve years, I am absolutely convinced that they will help us ," said Rangnick.
However, questions have been raised for adding injured Real Madrid star Alaba and Wober to the squad.
"We've nominated 28 players because it's unlikely that either David Alaba or Maxi Wöber will play. I still wanted them there, and they wanted to be there too. We'll give them the best possible care during their rehabilitation ," he said during his team presentation.
Over 35,000 tickets have been sold for the game between Ghana and Austria at the Ernst Happel Stadium.
The friendly will serve as a test for players to be selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America in the summer.
