Former Ghana head coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has urged patience and support for current Black Stars boss Otto Addo, urging Ghanaians to allow him the space to build a competitive side ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars are gearing up for the biggest soccer mundial to be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with 48 countries set to battle it out for the covetous trophy.
As the tournament approaches, Akonnor, the head coach of Kenya top-flight side Gor Mahia insists there is no need for external pressure on Otto Addo as he prepares the team for the mundial.
“To me, the coach [Otto Addo] must be given space to do his work. The major thing is for the technical team to have peace of mind to work,” he told the Daily Graphic.
Akonnor, 52, also welcomed the recent reinforcement of the Black Stars’ technical team, which now includes five additional personnel, among them Black Queens head coach, Kim Lars Björkegren. He described the move as a clear indication of the GFA’s confidence in Addo and his backroom staff.
“What is important is that the technical team has been strengthened; these are very capable men.”
The Black Stars will take on Austria on Friday, March 27 before traveling to Stuttgart for the high-profile friendly against Germany on Monday, March 30, 2026.
