Ghana Football Association (GFA) have formally charged Hohoe United for withdrawing from the ongoing Ghana Premier League “without just cause,” escalating the standoff between the club and the governing body.
In a statement, the GFA Prosecutor confirmed that Hohoe United have been charged with breaches of Articles 13(1) and 34(6)(d) of the Premier League Regulations, 2025. The club is accused of abandoning the competition and bringing the game into disrepute.
“Hohoe United FC has been charged⦠The Club is alleged to have withdrawn from the ongoing Ghana Premier League without just cause. It is further alleged that the conduct of the Club brings the name of the game into disrepute,” the statement said.
The club has been given until April 14, 2026, to respond.
The charge follows Hohoe United’s decision to withdraw from the league with seven matches remaining in what is their debut top-flight season. At the time, they were battling relegation, sitting in the bottom two with 30 points from 27 matches.
The situation escalated when the club failed to honour their Matchweek 29 fixture against Eleven Wonders. Wonders showed up, took to the pitch and were subsequently awarded three points and three goals in line with league regulations, although the result had little impact on their already confirmed relegation.
Hohoe United have defended their position with a detailed statement citing “systemic unfairness, procedural manipulation and apparent bias” as reasons for their withdrawal. The club pointed to a three-match home ban imposed over a security incident earlier in the season, arguing the timing of the sanction severely undermined their survival chances.
They also raised concerns over officiating and match handling, claiming a series of decisions, including venue changes and refereeing performances, went against them during a critical phase of the campaign.
With 20 of their 30 points earned at home, the enforced ban meant Hohoe United were left with just one remaining home fixture, significantly weakening their position in the relegation battle.
The case is now set to test the application of league regulations, with potential sanctions including forfeiture of matches, fines, and possible further disciplinary measures.
