FIFA has firmly rejected a controversial proposal to replace Iran with Italy at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the suggestion coming from a US political envoy.
Paolo Zampolli, a diplomat, claimed he had pitched the idea to former President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. "I have suggested that Italy replace Iran... it would be a dream," Zampolli said, pointing to Italy's status as four-time world champions.
However, FIFA is standing its ground. Infantino has already made the organisation's position clear, stating that the Iranian team will be at the tournament without question. This effectively ends any speculation that Iran could be removed due to ongoing geopolitical tensions involving the United States and Israel.
The concerns about Iran's participation have been fuelled by diplomatic strains. But US Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that there is no official ban on Iranian players. He noted that the issue is not with the athletes but with certain officials who may have links to the IRGC.
Iran's embassy has strongly condemned the proposal, calling it politically charged and inappropriate. The idea has also been rejected within Italy. The Azzurri failed to qualify for the World Cup after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a play-off, marking their third straight absence. Italy's sports minister, Andrea Abodi, dismissed the suggestion, stating that qualification must be earned on the pitch.
Under FIFA rules, the organisation does have the power to replace a team if a nation withdraws or is disqualified. But there is no indication that Iran will be excluded. The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will go ahead with Iran in the draw. Iran are scheduled to face New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt in the group stage.
