Former Asante Kotoko Board Chairman, Herbert Mensah, has questioned the strategic priorities of Ghana's football leadership, suggesting that the Black Stars may have overlooked the Africa Cup of Nations in favour of World Cup qualification.
Speaking to Luv FM, Mensah noted that while Ghana's failure to progress at the recent AFCON was "unfortunate", their subsequent qualification for the 2026 World Cup raises questions about where the team's focus truly lay.
"Our failure to get through to AFCON was unfortunate. The fact that we've gone to the World Cup says maybe we were looking bigger in different things. I don't think so, but maybe that was the kind of plan in terms of looking to go forward," Mensah stated.
The Rugby Africa President did not explicitly endorse the idea that Ghana deliberately sacrificed AFCON success for a World Cup berth, but his comments point to lingering concerns about the team's direction and decision-making at the administrative level.
With the World Cup now just weeks away, Mensah's remarks add to the growing scrutiny on the Ghana Football Association and Black Stars management to deliver a performance that justifies their planningâand any sacrifices made along the way.
