Belgian international Jeremy Doku has credited Pep Guardiola for transforming his mindset and helping him develop a stronger winning mentality since joining Manchester City.
The 22-year-old winger says working under Guardiola has fundamentally changed his approach to the game, shifting him from raw talent to a player focused on consistency, discipline, and results at the highest level.
“I learned how to win matches. That’s the difference from what I was like before,” Doku said. “At Manchester City, the demands are higher, the players are of higher quality, and they expect you to win every match.”
Since arriving at the club, Doku has been part of a system defined by relentless competition and high expectations, where every training session and match is geared toward maintaining City’s dominance across multiple competitions.
The Belgian winger further explained that the biggest adjustment has been adapting to a culture where winning is not occasional, but constant and expected.
“You play more finals, matches of this kind, and are always in a race for the title,” he added. “It’s a different kind of pressure that I’ve learned to deal with. It’s a special club because of its consistency.”
Under Guardiola, Manchester City have built a reputation as one of the most dominant sides in European football, regularly competing for trophies across domestic and continental competitions. Doku believes that environment has helped him grow not just technically, but mentally as well.
His comments come as City continue to prepare for another major final at Wembley Stadium, a stage that has become familiar territory for the squad in recent seasons. The club’s sustained success has created a culture where reaching finals is expected, and winning them is the standard.
Doku’s development reflects that environmentâwhere young players are quickly immersed in high-pressure situations and required to adapt to the demands of elite football.
For the Belgian winger, the lessons learned under Guardiola go beyond tactics or technique. They represent a deeper understanding of what it takes to succeed at the very top level: consistency, mentality, and the ability to deliver when it matters most.
As City continue their pursuit of more silverware, Doku’s evolution stands as another example of how Guardiola’s system continues to shape players into winners, reinforcing the club’s identity as one of football’s most relentless forces.
Doku has been outstanding in the FA Cup campaign, scoring one goal and providing four assists in 4 appearances. In all competitions, the pacey winger has made 44 appearances for Manchester City, scoring 8 goals and providing 14 assists.
