Coach Pape Thiaw has defended his decision to leave Malang Sarr out of Senegal’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite the defender’s impressive season in France.
Sarr’s omission has generated debate among Senegalese supporters after the defender was recently named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season following strong performances at club level.
Reports in Senegal had also suggested some senior players were against the defender joining the national team setup ahead of the tournament in North America.
Speaking after unveiling his World Cup squad, Thiaw insisted the decision was based purely on selection choices and squad balance.
“We've been hearing about Malang Sarr for quite some time. He's an excellent player, and I've spoken with him. He's a disciplined guy,” Thiaw said.
“I congratulated him on making the Ligue 1 XI. Now, there are choices to be made, and I stand by them. This is a balanced and well-considered group.”
The Senegal coach revealed he had personally spoken with the former Chelsea defender on two occasions in recent weeks.
“I spoke with Malang Sarr twice on the phone. The first time was to chat with him, the second was to congratulate him. I'm keeping an eye on him. I've named him among my reserves,” he added.
Senegal head into the World Cup as one of Africa’s strongest contenders after their impressive performances at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Lions defeated Morocco 1-0 in the final before CAF controversially awarded the title to the hosts after ruling Senegal had forfeited the match, a matter now before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Senegal have been drawn in Group I for the World Cup and will begin their campaign against France in New Jersey on June 16, in a repeat of their famous 2002 victory over the then-world champions.
They will also face Norway and Iraq in the group stage.
