Black Starlets head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has expressed disappointment after Ghana missed out on automatic qualification at the U17 Africa Cup of Nations following a drawing of lots that favoured Algeria.
Ghana and Algeria finished level on points, goals scored and goals conceded in Group D, forcing organisers to decide progression through a random draw.
“It wasn't pleasant news to all of us, the technical staff, myself, the players. We were very optimistic that we were going to win the drawing of lots,” he said.
“So, when Bosman put it on the platform, that when the ballot was cast, we were not picked first.
He described the process in detail, noting the absence of control in the outcome.
“So, quickly, I engaged the boys and told them that, for progressing to the next stage of the competition, we are out,” he added.
Despite the disappointment, Ogum has urged his players to reset quickly as they now face Uganda in a play-off for one of Africa’s remaining FIFA U17 World Cup slots.
