Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has insisted that he will not be angry if head coach Carlos Queiroz decides to start another goalkeeper at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging unity within the squad as five shot-stoppers battle for limited spots.
Asare has been Ghana's first-choice goalkeeper under Queiroz, but a costly error just two minutes into the recent friendly defeat to Mexico has opened the door for Lawrence Ati Zigi, Solomon Agbasi, Joseph Anang, and Paul Reverson to stake their claim.
Only three of the five are expected to make the final 26-man squad, which will be announced on June 1.
"If the coach starts another goalkeeper, it doesn't mean that because I'm the number one, I should be angry. We have to stay prayerful and united for collective success," Asare said ahead of Ghana's final pre-World Cup friendly against Wales on June 2.
The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper acknowledged the competition but stressed that personal ambition must not come at the expense of team harmony.
"I want to achieve great things for myself, but that does not mean I have achieved it as a number one for the national team. I have to work more because we have more goalkeepers, but we need to maintain unity so that we can reach our goal as a strong team."
With a new goalkeepers' trainer also implementing Queiroz's methods, Asare has had to adapt quickly. "Every coach has their style and tactical play. As a player, you need to follow the instructions and put in your best every time to prove you are capable."
Ghana open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17. For Asare, the focus remains on collective success â not individual status.
