Ghana have received a huge boost ahead of their crucial Group L encounter against England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with midfielder Thomas Partey now available for selection.
The experienced midfielder is set to rejoin the Black Stars squad after missing the team’s opening fixture against Panama due to visa-related issues in Canada.
Partey, 33, was unavailable for Ghana’s first group match after a Canadian court dismissed his visa appeal on Tuesday. The ruling, delivered by Roger R. Lafreniere, rejected requests to fast-track the matter or force immigration authorities to reconsider their decision before Ghana’s World Cup fixtures.
According to the court ruling, Partey failed to demonstrate a “serious issue” with the original visa refusal and did not meet the legal requirements necessary for extraordinary relief.
Lafreniere also noted that the Ghana international had been informed about concerns linked to the multiple rape and sexual assault charges he is facing in Britain, but had not sufficiently addressed those concerns during the visa application process.
Despite Partey’s absence, Ghana managed to grind out a narrow 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L match to make a positive start to the tournament.
His return now provides a timely lift for the Black Stars as they prepare for a far more difficult challenge against England. Partey’s experience and presence in midfield are expected to strengthen Ghana significantly ahead of the clash with the Three Lions.
The highly anticipated fixture is scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, with kick-off set for 20:00 GMT.
