Maxwell Konadu highlights need for better preparation and international exposure

Black Satellites head coach Maxwell Konadu believes greater international exposure and improved preparation will be essential if Ghana is to challenge successfully at the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana exited the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship at the group stage after finishing third in Group B, with a goalless draw against Togo bringing their campaign to an end.

Reflecting on the tournament, Konadu praised his players for their commitment but admitted the team fell short of the standards expected of the Black Satellites.

"We are happy with the team, but not entirely satisfied with the overall performance," he said.

The coach revealed that limited international experience affected the team's performance during the competition.

"Before this tournament, we talked about the lack of international matches, but we still believed in the boys and encouraged them to give their best. For me, they gave everything."

Konadu believes the tournament has helped identify players with the potential to represent Ghana at a higher level while also exposing areas that require improvement.

"It is good that we have seen what they can do. Some couldn't make the mark, while others showed they have what it takes."

Looking ahead, the former Ghana international stressed that proper preparation will be the key to success.

"Now we have to prepare very well because without proper preparation you cannot win tournaments. We had enough time to train, but I think exposure made the difference."

Konadu also pointed to the unpredictable nature of football, using Nigeria's campaign as an example that pre-tournament expectations do not always determine results.

"When Nigeria started the tournament, everybody expected them to top the group. But football is unpredictable."

Despite the disappointing outcome, the coach remains optimistic that the experience gained in Cote d'Ivoire will prove invaluable.

With Ghana set to host the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, the technical team now has a clearer understanding of the work required to build a stronger, more competitive Black Satellites side capable of competing for the title.
