Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has expressed confidence in his team's progress as Ghana prepare to face Malawi in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations.
The Queens are aiming to reach the semi-finals for the second consecutive tournament after finishing third last year. A place in the last four would also secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Bjorkegren acknowledged the quality of their opponents while backing his side to rise to the occasion.
"They are pretty good, a hard-working group. It's going to be tough for us. We also see our potential; we believe in ourselves," he said.
"We think that we have improved in this tournament… and also believe in ourselves and can keep the ball in the team, take care of the chances a little bit better than we have done so far, but we need to do this to our game."
Ghana finished second in Group D with four points, following a 2-0 victory over Cape Verde, a 1-0 loss to Cameroon, and a 1-1 draw against Mali. The Black Queens will face a Malawi side that advanced from Group C as runners-up to Nigeria.
Ghana beat Malawi 4-0 in a pre-tournament friendly, but Björkegren knows the quarter-final will be a different test.
"We believe in ourselves and can keep the ball in the team take care of the chances a little bit better than we have done so far."
The winner will secure a place in the semi-finals and qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil. For Ghana, it represents an opportunity to continue their journey towards a first WAFCON title.
The quarter-final kicks off on Sunday, August 9, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
