Atalanta have been dealt a significant blow as Ghana winger Kamaldeen Sulemana has been diagnosed with a second-degree tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee, ruling him out for an estimated two to three months.
The injury occurred during a pre-season friendly against Schalke 04, where Sulemana was forced to leave the pitch just minutes after his introduction as a second-half substitute.
Instrumental tests conducted by the club's medical staff confirmed the severity of the ligament damage. The 24-year-old is set to begin his rehabilitation immediately.
The injury comes at a particularly inopportune time for both the player and the club. Sulemana was hoping to use the pre-season friendlies to accumulate valuable minutes and build momentum ahead of the new Serie A campaign. Instead, he now faces a lengthy period on the sidelines.
For Atalanta, the situation is a major tactical headache. Head coach Maurizio Sarri is now facing a shortage of reliable options in the wide attacking positions, particularly on the left flank.
With the departures of Daniel Maldini and El Bilal Touré, Nicola Zalewski is currently the only natural alternative on the left side, while the right flank also lacks depth beyond young talent Federico Cassa. This injury crisis is already forcing the club to re-evaluate their transfer market strategy.
Sulemana, who joined Atalanta from Southampton, will now begin his recovery with the goal of returning to full fitness by November. His absence will be a significant loss for the Nerazzurri as they navigate the opening months of the 2026/27 campaign.
