West Bromwich Albion Academy Manager Richard Stevens believes Kayden Lucas has the hunger and physical qualities to develop into an important player after joining the club from Newcastle United.
The 18-year-old midfielder, who has Ghanaian roots, has signed a one-year deal with Albion, with an option for a further year, and will join the club’s PL2 team.
Lucas impressed during his trial period at The Hawthorns, convincing the academy staff that he deserved the opportunity to continue his development with the club.
“I’m a fan of the players who come in with hunger, a point to prove and want to show they can cope, and Kayden is one of those,” Stevens said.
“He joins us from Newcastle, and during the trial period, he did very well. He’s hungry to be part of this football club.”
Stevens believes Lucas’ physical attributes could also give him an advantage as he adapts to his new environment.
“His tall stature and ability with the ball are factors I know we can help him develop further this season,” he added.
The 1.92m midfielder is primarily an attacking midfielder and brings a strong physical presence to the position.
Stevens also expects competition within the squad to push Lucas to improve.
“Physically, he’s different to what we have in the squad, and he’ll have to show his qualities because there’s a lot of talent looking to push their careers on,” he said.
“Hopefully, that competition will drive his desire to succeed here.”
