Abdul Mumin: I am here to return Girona to the LaLiga

Abdul Mumin has made Girona’s promotion push his immediate priority after completing his move to the Spanish second-tier club.

The Ghanaian central defender was presented by Girona on Monday and made it clear that his focus is firmly on helping the club return to La Liga as quickly as possible.

“I am here to return to the First Division as soon as possible,” Mumin said during his presentation.

The defender joins Girona with considerable experience of Spanish football, having spent recent seasons with Rayo Vallecano in La Liga. His experience was one of the qualities praised by Girona president Delfí Geli.

“Mumin already has experience in the Spanish League, in the First Division, and in other leagues, and we believe he is a player who will be an important help for the team to become consistent and competitive in the Second Division,” Geli said.

Girona sporting director Quique Cárcel also explained why the club identified Mumin as the right defensive addition.

“We were looking for a fast defensive player profile, and we think he can help us a lot,” Carcel said.

“Logically, it wasn’t easy to bring him here because he could have had other offers, but in the end, he chose Girona, and we are very happy. He can provide that balance that the team will surely need.”

Mumin, however, does not see himself arriving at Girona to take on the role of dressing-room leader. Instead, he wants to contribute wherever he is needed.

“I am here to give my best, not to be the leader of the team, but to help the club achieve its goals. I am a team player and am willing to play wherever the coach suggests,” he said.

The Ghanaian also compared Girona’s style with that of his former club Rayo Vallecano.

“I think football is a universal language. Whatever style you play, in the end, it’s football, and it’s very similar,” Mumin explained.

“At Rayo, the game is more vertical, while at Girona, it’s more about possession. Maybe that’s a bit of the difference, but you always find similarities in all clubs.”

Mumin’s arrival gives Girona an experienced option at the back as they target promotion back to Spain’s top flight.
