Ernest Nuamah features as Lyon's Champions League dream ends in playoff heartbreak

Ghana winger Ernest Nuamah started for Olympique Lyonnais in their decisive Champions League playoff second leg against Fenerbahçe on Wednesday night, but the French side's hopes of returning to Europe's elite competition were dashed in a 2-1 defeat at the Groupama Stadium.

Having drawn 1-1 in Istanbul last week, Lyon knew a victory would secure their place in the Champions League proper for the first time since the 2019-2020 season. Paulo Fonseca named an attacking lineup, with Nuamah starting on the right wing alongside Lois Openda and Malick Fofana in a front three.

Lyon pressed high and looked to exploit their wingers' pace, but it was Fenerbahçe who struck first. In the 29th minute, Nuamah and Ainsley Maitland-Niles were caught out of position, allowing Oguz Aydin space to deliver a cross that Vedat Muriqi headed home. Four minutes later, Maitland-Niles was beaten at the back post, and Archie Brown doubled the visitors' lead with a free header.

Lyon responded early in the second half when Malick Fofana volleyed home from Maitland-Niles' cross to make it 2-1. The hosts pushed for an equaliser, with Openda and substitute Kail Boudache having efforts ruled out, but they could not find the crucial second goal.

The 22-year-old Ghana international, who has been a key part of Lyon's attacking setup since returning from a long injury layoff, started the match but struggled to make a significant impact. He was substituted late in the game as Lyon pushed for an equaliser.

The result means Lyon will drop into the Europa League group stage, a significant blow for a club that invested heavily in hopes of a Champions League return.

For Nuamah, who had scored in the previous qualifying round against Sparta Prague—his first goal in 17 months - the playoff exit is a frustrating setback after his long road to recovery.

Lyon will now shift focus to their Europa League campaign and Ligue 1 ambitions, with Nuamah expected to remain a key figure as Fonseca's side looks to bounce back from this continental disappointment.
