Baba Sharif Mohammed and Enoch Sarpong were named Most Valuable Players after helping Ashanti Region and Volta Region to Group A victories in the 2026 MTN Elite U-19 Championship on Friday.
Sharif earned the individual award following Ashanti Region’s hard-fought 1-0 win over Upper West Region at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
The youngster played an important part in Ashanti’s determined performance, as his side secured another valuable victory in the competition. Mohammed Dayvon scored the only goal of the match in the 54th minute to give Ashanti Region all three points.
Ashanti had to work hard for the result, with Upper West Region unable to find a way through and level the contest after Dayvon’s decisive strike. Sharif’s display was recognised at the end of the game, with his contribution earning him the Most Valuable Player honour for his team.
Volta Region also collected three points in the other Group A fixture, beating Western Region 2-0.
Sarpong was named MVP after producing an impressive performance in a convincing win that allowed Volta Region to respond positively to their earlier setback. His display was central to Volta’s strong showing as they claimed an important result in the group.
Agbogah Cisse put Volta ahead in the 36th minute, giving his side a lead before half-time. Western Region were unable to produce an equaliser, and Samuel Maja added Volta’s second goal late in the match to complete the victory.
Sarpong’s contribution throughout the game earned him the individual award and highlighted the quality emerging from the MTN Elite U-19 Championship.
The performances of Sharif and Sarpong provided further evidence of the competition’s role in giving young players an opportunity to make an impact in a competitive environment. The championship is designed to support the development of some of Ghana’s most promising footballers by helping them improve their technical and tactical abilities.
It also offers players valuable experience in organised competition, experience that can support their continued growth and contribute to their future careers.
Friday’s results gave both Ashanti Region and Volta Region important Group A victories, while the performances of the two MVPs added an individual focus to a significant day in the championship. Sharif’s contribution came in a narrow win for Ashanti, while Sarpong helped Volta Region record the more emphatic result against Western Region.
The 2026 MTN Elite U-19 Championship continues to provide a platform for Ghana’s young footballers to develop and gain exposure through competitive matches.
