Ofosu and Korlettey earn MVP awards in decisive MTN Elite U-19 Group B matches

Northern Region held their nerve in a penalty shootout against Brong Ahafo Region, while Central Region secured a late victory over Greater Accra Region as Friday’s Group B action in the MTN Elite U-19 Championship produced two standout individual performances.

Despite Brong Ahafo Region’s defeat, Bright Ofosu was named Most Valuable Player after an impressive display in a dramatic contest that ended 2-2 after regulation time before Northern Region prevailed 3-2 on penalties.

Brong Ahafo made the stronger start and took an early lead through Kwaku Frimpong Jnr. Northern Region responded to bring the match level before moving in front as the game developed.

Brong Ahafo refused to surrender, however, and found a way back into the contest to restore parity and force a shootout. Northern Region were ultimately more composed from the spot, converting enough penalties to secure a 3-2 victory.

Ofosu’s influence throughout the match was nevertheless recognised. His energetic and effective performance earned him the MVP award, even though Brong Ahafo were unable to complete the comeback by winning the shootout.

Desmond Korlettey was also rewarded with the Most Valuable Player honour after helping Central Region claim a valuable 1-0 win over Greater Accra Region in the final Group B fixture of the day.

The match appeared likely to finish without a goal as Central Region defended resolutely against a Greater Accra side that had impressed with its attacking displays earlier in the competition.

Central Region remained disciplined as Greater Accra looked to break through, but neither team was able to find the decisive touch during the main periods of the match.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 91st minute when Kwame Amoako scored a late winner for Central Region. The goal secured three important points and capped a memorable finish for the side.

Korlettey’s contribution across the contest played a significant part in Central Region’s success and earned him the individual award.

The MTN Elite U-19 Championship continues to give some of Ghana’s most promising young footballers an opportunity to develop their technical and tactical qualities in a competitive environment.

The tournament is also providing valuable match experience, which can support the players’ continued development and contribute to their future careers.

Friday’s results underlined the fine margins involved at youth level, with Northern Region requiring penalties to overcome Brong Ahafo after a closely fought encounter, while Central Region had to wait until stoppage time to secure victory.

Both Ofosu and Korlettey emerged as the leading performers in their respective matches, highlighting the individual talent on display during the latest round of Group B fixtures.
