The Ghana Football Association (GFA) placed player safety and welfare at the centre of the 2026 MTN Elite U-19 Championship, with safeguarding measures implemented throughout the 11-day competition at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
Ahead of the tournament, the GFA conducted a safeguarding risk assessment to identify potential threats to the young players and put measures in place to address them.
The assessment covered areas including player welfare, medical support, emergency response and the general safety of participants.
As part of the preparations, players also received education on issues that can affect young footballers, including abuse, exploitation and trafficking.
They were encouraged to recognise potential dangers, make informed decisions and report concerns through the appropriate channels. Players were also advised to seek help from trusted adults and designated safeguarding officials when necessary.
The GFA maintained its safeguarding oversight throughout the competition, with particular attention given to players who suffered injuries during matches and training.
Injured players were monitored and provided with the required medical attention and follow-up care to support their recovery.
The safeguarding programme formed part of the GFA's wider efforts to create a safe environment for young footballers competing in the Elite U-19 Championship.
The tournament concluded on Friday with Ashanti Region crowned champions after beating defending champions Eastern Region 4-3 in a seven-goal final.
