Asante Kotoko coach Eric Tinkler believes his side showed strong character by recovering from a deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against newly promoted Debibi United on the opening weekend of the Ghana Premier League.
Kotoko took the lead in the game, but Debibi United responded strongly to turn the match around and move 2-1 ahead.
The Porcupine Warriors then fought back to secure a point, a response Tinkler believes is an important positive despite his disappointment at failing to win.
“I think what's important is that I don't get misunderstood in terms of when I talk about the performance of the team is the fact that we didn't win the match. I wanted to win the match, but looking at the performance, the whole team didn't perform that poorly,” Tinkler said.
“The team responded really, really well after going two down. From past games that I've watched from last season, when they started losing, they dropped their heads and they gave up.
“But they didn't do that in this match. They showed that they still had the fighting spirit in them and they managed to come back and get the equaliser.”
Tinkler remains unhappy with the goals Kotoko conceded and wants those defensive lapses corrected ahead of Sunday’s home clash with Heart of Lions.
“We've got to take the positives from that game. We look to fix the errors that we made, especially the way we conceded the goals, and we look to move forward,” he added.
“We want to get back to keeping clean sheets and, as I said, we want to make our home ground a fortress. It starts with good defence.”
Kotoko will be aiming for their first victory of the season when they welcome Heart of Lions to the Baba Yara Stadium.
